Walter Ahlström had suggested the company build a paper mill in Varkaus already in 1912, but the decision was delayed due to war and troubled times. Production on the paper machine – first in Varkaus, the widest in Finland and maybe even Europe – began on the 4th anniversary of Finland’s independence in 1921. In 1922, Ahlström was the largest paper manufacturer in Finland after Kymi Oy.
